JANUARY FEATURED WAHM
Have you ever considered becoming a medical transcriptionist? Or maybe just wondered what is involved in this seemingly popular at-home business? Well, wonder no more. This month, I’m happy to introduce you to Stephanie Craig, an MT who lets us in on everything we need to know about getting starting as a medical transcriptionist.
NAME: STEPHANIE CRAIG
TYPE OF BUSINESS: MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTIONIST? 2 1/2 years
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO GO INTO THIS PROFESSION? I wanted to do something at home and I did not want to go into sales. I heard about medical transcription on television and checked it out at my local college.
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB CONSIST OF? Every day that I work, I log onto the website and download audio files. I can choose how many files I want and even certain doctors I want to work for. I pick the ones with close deadlines (the transcription industry calls them turn-around times or TATs). The deadlines for each specific company can vary from 4 hours to 24 hours.
After the files are downloaded, I open the templates that go with the files and I transcribe the audio files. I have a transcription program called Express Scribe that I got online for free, and I type the files into Word. I purchased a foot pedal from ebay which is connected to my computer so I can play, stop, and rewind the audio with my foot.
When I am done, I proofread the medical report against the audio and then I upload the files back on the website.
WHERE DO YOU FIND JOBS?
Here are a few places to find work:
Mtjobs – www.mtjobs.com
Mtstars - http://forum.mtstars.com/seeker/
wahm.com (has general and medical transcription info and job links) - http://www.wahm.com/forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=38
HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU WORK, ON AVERAGE, PER WEEK? 10-20 but many companies want you to work 40.
HOW MUCH DO YOU EARN, ON AVERAGE, PER WEEK? I average $70 – $100 per week. I get paid $0.07 per line. Each line is based on 65 characters per line. Most medical transcriptionists get paid more, but I choose to stay with this company because they offer me a lot of flexibility with schedules, which I need right now.
WHAT'S THE BEST PART OF THE JOB? I love that I can work this job around my schedule. Last April my 2-year-old son was diagnosed with leukemia. We have had so many trips to the doctor and hospitals (some close to home in Bay City but most are in Ann Arbor) that I had to quit another job to take care of him. This company was willing to work with my schedule, which can be quite unpredictable.
WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF THE JOB? Doctor’s dialect. There are some doctors from other countries that have trouble putting together a coherent sentence in English. There are others with horrible accents. Because I spent two years in school for this, I know what they are supposed to be saying but often it doesn’t sound like it. Then there are American doctors who mumble or who rush through the stats. It can take months to understand what some doctors are trying to say.
WHY SHOULD OTHER MOM'S CONSIDER BECOMING A MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTIONIST? Medical transcription offers great flexibility, if you have the right company. Some transcriptionists work for local hospitals or doctors offices, so there are many job opportunities. It is also a good job for someone who loves English and being precise with work. Many transcriptionists can continue this career for years if they want to.
The training no longer has to be held at colleges. Many schools offer the curriculum to be done at the student’s own pacing. Anyone considering medical transcription should check out: http://www.ahdionline.org/scriptcontent/mtapproved.cfm which is a list of schools approved by ADHI (Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity). Today, most companies will not take any new transcriptionist who does not graduate from one of the approved schools.

WAHMZONE ARTICLEOF THE MONTH
In today’s economy, if business isn’t going as well as you projected, you may be tempted to give up. Here’s an encouraging article to help you stay focused even during to tough times.
Entrepreneurship is Like Parenting:
Nurture Your Business in Good Times and Bad
By: Debra Gould
Your business was conceived the moment you had the idea that would free you from the daily grind of working for someone else. You worked hard to bring that business into the world; drafting a plan, coming up with a name, finding a designer to create your logo, a developer to get your website online, all of that is like labor. That business is your baby.
You were there throughout its infancy losing sleep, doing what you could to keep it growing, healthy and thriving. You put everything you had into it; you read everything you could get your hands on about growing your business just like a new mother devours parenting magazines and how-to books. When a business is new, it’s almost a novelty. It’s thrilling to watch something you created from nothing grow into something bigger. When you’re complimented on your brand you feel proud as a parent showing off baby pictures.
Then as your business moves from its infancy, all of a sudden the adrenaline has worn off a bit. You see how much work it is just to keep everything going. Of course you love your business, your baby, but the long nights are catching up to you, and you’ve been tending to it all by yourself; it’s taking all your energy. It’s at this stage that we are likely to lose our momentum when it comes to building our businesses.
If you’re coming out of the infancy stage of your business as we slip into an economic recession, you might be tempted to give up, more so than if the economy were good. As a parent you can’t just decide you’re bored and discard the baby, moving on to something else, so as an entrepreneur why would you just let your business fade away?
As a parent, when times are tough and you’re feeling challenged, you look for support, whether it’s from a spouse, another parent, or an online network made up of people in the same situation as you. You continue to nourish your child when money’s tight (like you must continue to invest in marketing your business) and you think about how rewarding the entire process will be in the end.
No matter what, you owe it to yourself and your business to realize its true potential. If you give up the moment you start to lose momentum, or you fear the economy will force you out of business you’ll never know what could have become of your enterprise, your dream, your baby. Like parenting, being an entrepreneur is one of the most rewarding things you’ll do in your life.
If you haven’t read The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It (which should be required reading for entrepreneurs) you should pick up a copy as soon as you can. Author, Michael Gerber spends a great deal of time forcing you to look at your business as if it were a child going through different developmental stages. He takes you through the reasons why most small businesses fail and how to prevent that outcome yourself.
Debra Gould, president of the internationally recognized home staging company Six Elements Inc. has no trouble attracting clients. An entrepreneur by the age of 30, she also created The Staging Diva® Home Staging Business Training Program with 1000+ Graduates worldwide & is the founder of the Directory of Home Stagers.
