It's already July but where I live, we haven't actually experienced much summer yet, as temperatures have been well below normal for this time of year. I'm still waiting for that hot and humid weather so I can take advantage of all my friends and family who own a pool. In the meantime, I've been indoors getting lots of work done! What about you? Have you been working hard or hardly working as you get into the swing of summer?

I am happy to report an increase in activity on the WahmZone message boards! Maybe my monthly newsletter plea is working or maybe you guys are spreading the word (if so, THANK YOU!). Getting past take-off with your home-based business

Moms across the globe are starting work at home businesses every day. The desire to be home for their children would be the number one reason most women site for starting a home-based business or job. Yet, a staggering amount of home-based businesses fail before they even hit the ground. With the desire for home-based income, what causes these business failures?
We have determined that the desire is present, but more than desire is required to build a long-lasting business. I can desire to have a new car, but until I do the work, in this case searching for the car that fits my needs and budget, I won't see that car materialize. Many would-be work at home moms start with the same concept. They "open" a website, place a few ads, get the business cards, then they wait….and wait…and wait, until finally the day comes that they give up and move on to something else. So what can we, as work at home moms, do to ensure that we've done all we can to see success in our business?
First, find your niche, or in other words, find what you're good at. If you couldn't sell ice in the desert then direct sales probably isn't the business for you. Think about what your family and friends have noted that you do well. Are you musical? Maybe you have a flare for decorating? Make a list then see which things you wouldn't mind doing every day. When you have a job you enjoy, you want to succeed in it.
Once you've narrowed your list down to a few business ideas, it's time to hit the computer or library. Research and learn everything you can about your ideas. Would it make a good business? What tasks would be required of you? How many other people are doing the same thing? Can you put a personal touch on it to make it unique? And finally, is there a need for the services or product you are offering?
Having decided on a specific business idea, it's time to test the waters. Any large corporation can be found at www.something. Work at home businesses should have a web presence as well. Start small, even use a free web host at first, but get your idea in front of others. A domain name is a good idea if you can afford it, but many start-up businesses utilize free hosting subdomains. The important thing is to have a website address that is easy to remember.
So you have decided on the type of business you want to pursue, researched your ideas, and built a website, now what? Market your business. Marketing is more than putting out a few ads and banners. Get involved in groups that focus on your market, i.e. if you are selling children's clothing in an online boutique, join mom's groups and get to know the other mom's in the group, participate in the discussion. When one of your new online friends is looking for that special outfit for little Lucy, she'll more than likely remember you and your business because you have built a relationship first.
Doing all of the above doesn't ensure that you'll make loads of sales, but it does ensure that you have made every effort to succeed.
