Where Business and Motherhood Meet

Can you believe the year is about half over? Wow! Many of you are now easing (or maybe struggling) into summer. With kids home 24/7, nice weather beckoning us outdoors, upcoming vacations to plan and look forward to, it sometimes makes working seem, oh I don't know, impossible?

But…sigh…we moms do what we need to do, right? One of the toughest challenges of being a work-at-home mom during the summer months is being constantly available to our kids. Be sure to read the June Featured Article, titled, "How to be a Fun Mom." It really is possible!

In the meantime, hop on over to the WahmZone forums to vent your frustrations or ask for ideas on activities you can do with your kids this summer. The Mental Moms forum is the perfect place to connect with other moms going through the same challenges (and joys) as you are: http://www.wahmforums.com/boards/viewforum.php?f=46

On another note, if you need business advice, or have any business-related questions, post it in the Business Advice and Business Topics forum: http://www.wahmforums.com/boards/viewforum.php?f=4

But first, let me introduce you to a great new business opportunity! Read on!

JUNE FEATURED WAHM

I'd like to introduce you to Stephanie Thurin, this month's Featured Wahm. She is excited to share this brand new Luminarias opportunity with you. If you're looking to start a business, or would like more information, I encourage you to contact Stephanie and consider getting in now, at the ground floor level.

WAHMZONE: How long have you been with Luminarias and what made you decide to join?

STEPHANIE THURIN: I have been with Luminarias as a head consultant since the beginning of March this year. The consultant program has only been available since March 1st, although Luminarias has been a retail store for several years.

WZ: Tell us a little about the company and what your job consists of.

STEPHANIE: Luminarias sells candles both from our set line and also provides custom-made orders. Customers can pick and choose scents and colors. No one else is doing that! If someone wants a specific scent, out owner will attempt to find the oil and make it for them. We use food-grade wax and cosmetic-grade oils and candles are hand-poured to order.

Luminarias began as a retail store in San Antonio, TX., and the demand for their products was so great that they decided to implement a consultant program and take the candles nationwide.

I was one of the first people to become a consultant, and now have a wonderful team under me. I have a down-line of people from California to Illinois and several points in between. In addition to selling the product, my position is to mentor and inspire my team to fulfill their abilities

WZ: How many hours do you work per week, on average, including all aspects of the job?

STEPHANIE: Probably 10-20 hours a week at present. It really depends on the week and my desire. That's one of the aspects of my business that I like.

WZ: What is the Company Payment Plan/Incentive Program & your personal average weekly income?

STEPHANIE: Our consultants start at 30% and go up from there. I make 35% as a Head Consultant and can make more of a base as more people sign up under me. I also earn residual income off my down-line, 7% of their sales on first-line. Plus there are bonuses, etc.

WZ: How do you market your business and get new clients?

STEPHANIE: I advertise on various websites, and spend time on different message boards to get the word out. I also advertise locally by spreading business cards throughout my area and doing craft show booths, etc.

WZ: What is your favorite part of the job?

STEPHANIE: That I can set my own hours and work when I want. Also, I love helping others realize their own potential and getting to know people from all over the country.

WZ: How about the most challenging part of the job?

STEPHANIE: Because we are so new, people from outside of Texas are not very familiar with Luminarias yet. It's challenging to get the word out.

WZ: Why should other moms consider looking into working for this company?

STEPHANIE: We are ground-floor and there is so much opportunity for growth. We are planning on expanding our product line as we grow, and that will bring in a larger customer base. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone who is looking for their own business on their terms with very little investment. We are a close-knit group of consultants who don't mind giving advice and are happy to support one another.

WZ: Is there a website or link you'd like to share?

STEPHANIE: www.LuminariasCandles.com

JUNE FEATURED ARTICLE

Feel like you're always in "Business Mode" and have a hard time transitioning to "Mom Mode?" No problem! Just follow these guidelines and your kids will be calling you a fun mom in no time!

5 Ways to be a Fun Mom
By Lynn Powers

A couple years ago, my daughter told me I wasn't a "fun mom." Granted, the comment came when I was busy with something and it wasn't possible for me to drop what I was doing and play with her. But I'll admit, the comment still stung.

Of course, because I work at home, there will certainly be times when I have to say no. There is work that needs to be done and my kids need to learn that the world doesn't completely revolve around them. But, are there times when I am so consumed with my work that "no" becomes an automatic response to my kids' pleas to play? Do I need to lighten up? Have I forgotten how to become a fun mom?

As any work-at-home mom knows, balancing work and motherhood is not easy! But, at the end of the day, would I rather say I got each of the twelve things done on my to-do list? Or that I took some time to pay attention to the needs of my child?

Here are five ways you can get your work done and still be considered a "fun mom."

1. Take a Time Out. When your child is pleading with you to play with her, take a moment to consider whether she may be desperate for time with you. A child can only go so long without some quality time with her mom. Take a half an hour break to spend playing a game, drawing a picture, or taking a walk around the block.

2. Set the timer. Tell your child you will set the timer for one hour. When the timer goes off, it will be time to play. You will then set the timer for twenty minutes and play whatever it is he wants to play, whether it's matchbox cars, a board game, or silly dancing to a favorite CD. Do that a couple of times throughout the day. And stay true to your word - when you hear that "ding," drop what you're doing. Let him know he's the priority.

3. Make lunch time a fun time. Use the hour to involve your child in making sandwiches and setting the table. Leave the paperwork in the office and focus on your child. Ask her questions about things she enjoys - like what she's named her latest WebKinz or what happened on her favorite television show this morning.

4. Put him to work! We're not talking child labor, here. But, if possible, involve your child in your work. Of course, the work needs to be age-appropriate. A three-year old can put paper in the recycling bin. A five year old is able to stamp envelopes. A ten year old can do some filing. You may get more work done this way, or less, but involving your child will be priceless.

5. LAUGH! Take a moment to tell your daughter a silly joke. Relive a funny moment from the past. Have a five minute "tickling spree." If hearing your child's laughter doesn't get you started, nothing will. Besides the "fun" factor, laughing reduces stress and ups the immune system - an added benefit for you both!

Working at home and being a fun mom can go hand-in-hand. It's all about balance. But when you find the scale tipping a little too far on the work side, your child may just remind you that it's time to step away for a moment or two. And don't forget to grab that FUN hat on your way out of the office door.
